Reading Response
Early on in Johann Hari’s book “Lost Connections” it is established by the author that he has come face to face with the story’s main idea. He has experienced depression. While going through his depression Hari was convinced that the antidepressants worked as he had forced himself to believe they did. Soon however he learned that was false. In fact antidepressants he were taking were proven to work less affectively that a placebo. His thoughts were summarized by this quote, “Here was the drug I started taking as a teenager, and here was the company that manufactured it, saying in their own words, that it didn’t work for people like me – but they were going to carry on promoting it anyway”(Hari 26).
The line exemplifies that greed is a very much problem in capitalism and the pharmaceutical industry is more worried about the bottom line than about their consumers. If a drug is proven not work effectively then what is the point of manufacturing it to begin with? The quote tells of the struggle that many people with real problem are now forced to face. If the drugs I take don’t work then what treatments, if any, are there to treat my depression?
